HOUSEBREAKING YOUR PUPPY
KEY WORD: Consistency! Google & People may say the small dogs can be impossible to potty train. We disagree! We think if you can train an owner, you can train a puppy. The following are our suggestions to the best method for housebreaking a Fuzzypup!
What comes in must come out. Therefore, please put your puppy on a feeding schedule. As he is growing, he needs breakfast, lunch and dinner. Around 4-6 months of age s/he will probably start ignoring lunch, so you no longer need it. However, make sure you increase his breakfast & dinner portions.
We recommend & use "NutriSource small/medium breed puppy food", however, any Super Premium dog food should work. NOTE* quality dog food is essential in housebreaking. Poor quality dog food can cause a digestive problems &n make housebreaking a nightare! www.nutrisourcedogfood.com (click this link & enter zip location nearerst you). You can also find at most feed store, boutique stores, murdochs, & Chewy.com delivers. This brand is not found at Petsmart, Walmart, Petco or grocery stores.
HAVANESE: - 1/4 -1/3 cup dry kibble mixed with 1 tbs wet additive.
WHEATEN: - 1/3 - 1/2 cup dry kibble mixed with 2-3 TBS wet additive.
WET ADDITIVE: canned pumpkin, baby food, yogurt (vanilla), cottage cheese, canned chicken, rice, canned tuna. By adding the wet to the dry, you will help puppy process his meal faster & s/he will poop faster.
If puppy stops eating or isn't eating much, try less kibble more wet additive. NOTE* A puppy who wakes up with a too empty tummy will throw up yellow bile. If this happens, give your puppy a tablespoon or 2 of yogurt, cottage cheese, canny puppy food or even vanilla ice cream before he goes to bed.
NOTE* DIET PRODUCTS CAN BE POISON! AVOID ANYTHING WITH ARTIFICIAL SUGAR OR SUGAR SUBSTITUTES. ALSO, AVOID LOW FATS; USE 4% COTTAGE CHEESE, NOT LOW FAT.
Keep a diary for the first couple weeks, and note when puppy is voiding. That will help you learn his schedule. He will be very consistent, so if you pay attention, he will train you to his needs.
KENNEL TRAINING: Feed puppy. Then put puppy in kennel for 45-60 minutes then take him out for him to void out his meal. Use a command each time you take him out so he knows the purpose of his visit to the outdoors. If he does not void right away, get him moving by playing with him. This will help to get those bowels moving. If doesn't void within 10 minutes, put him back in his kennel for 10-15 minutes then try again. Continue the in kennel out to potty until he voids. Once he does his business, praise him and offer a treat. Then allow another 5 minutes or so to make sure this is the whole of his void. By writing down what time he was fed & what time voided you should be trained, based on his needs, by the end of a week or two as you will know puppies schedule.
If puppy is doing the turn around in a circle he either has to go potty or is going to go to sleep. Give him the benefit of the doubt & take him out. Also, take puppy out every 2 hours regularly to go pee.
Each time puppy voids where he should, give lots of excited praise & a treat. Puppies, like children, learn from positive reinforcement & praise when they do what is right. Never, ever yell, beat, rub nose, etc. a puppy who has an accident inside. This will make him think he is not supposed to void at all & he will have more accidents while trying not to do what is normal for him to do.
