TRICKS & TRIPS for the 1st couple weeks: This page has most of the FAQ from over the 20+ yrs we've been in business, but as time goes on new things pop up so feel free to check back from time to time for new stuff.
TRICKS & TRIPS for the 1st couple weeks:
At night put stuffed animal, chew toy, & dirty clothes out of laundry basket in kennel with puppy. We recommend you do this with all members of household, even if it’s just a sock that you put a know in. This gives puppy the scent of all members of the household in their bedroom. Makes them feel less alone at night since without siblings & helps puppy bond more quickly. The stuffed animal leaves puppy feeling like they have company to cuddle with, chew toy is to chew on if gets bored.
We now only use collars for holding the puppy name & owners phone number tag. We recommend harness & soft sided leash for potty training. It allows for control over puppy entire body instead of just neck, which can get damaged by collar if pulled on. This was recommended to us by trainer & vet.
Keeping in mind puppy is new to collar, harness & leash training. In order to help get puppy used to both harness & leash we recommend letting puppy run around house while wearing them. This allows puppy to get used to the feel & weight of both harness & leash other than just outside going potty.
Since puppy is still getting used to harness & leash while potty training puppy pick puppy up & carry outside. After 2nd week puppy should be basically potty trained, then you can put puppy on harness & leash to walk out. If you don't know puppy schedule by end of 1st week please contact us for help. Easier to help create good habit than break a bad one habit.
We do recommend using our food while potty training. Just switching can upset puppy tummy & make it difficult to potty train. If you choose to switch after this time period that is fine. We do recommend transitioning foods not just straight switching as again can be difficult for tummy. We recommend 70-3-, 50-50, 30-70, 100 the other food over the course of couple weeks.
